Caves, Caverns, and Cinematic Spotlight

Now, let’s talk about the caves. The Great Masson Cavern and Great Rutland Cavern are not just holes in the ground; they’re gateways to the past. The guided tours, lasting approximately 30 minutes each, are highly recommended. These caves were once mined for lead and Fluorspar. As the deposits depleted and more affordable lead was imported in the 1800s, miners saw an opportunity to profit by showcasing the mines to the public. Consequently, the Heights of Abraham transformed into a sought-after tourist destination, maintaining its allure to this day.

The Heights of Abraham has had its moment in the cinematic spotlight. An ITV children’s television drama series titled ‘Stanley’s Dragon’ featured scenes shot within one of the site’s caves.

Interestingly, Debs, my mum, played a pivotal role in the production of this series. As the Production Designer, she was instrumental in bringing the story to life. This series, remembered fondly by many, had a particularly memorable sequence where the protagonist, Stanley, stumbles upon a mysterious egg as a result of a rock fall deep within the cave. This egg, as the story unfolds, hatches to reveal a baby dragon, setting the stage for a tale of wonder and adventure as the dragon grows. Other locations used for this series were Nottingham Castle and Twycross Zoo.

A Journey Through History

The name “Heights of Abraham” is steeped in history. It dates back to 1759, commemorating the British victory at The Plains of Abraham in Quebec, whereby the Heights of Abraham in Quebec resembled the Heights at Matlock Bath. This historical significance was further cemented in the 1830s when young Princess Victoria, the future Queen Victoria, graced the site with her presence. To honour her visit, a tower was erected by lead miners. This structure, known as the Victoria Prospect Tower, stands tall to this day, offering visitors a panoramic view of the surroundings.

Interestingly, the hill has been mined for lead since Roman Times and the unique environment is a direct result of all the mining that took place. It’s now a Sight of Special Scientific Interest (SSSI). You can see an entrance to a mine, it’s called Tinkers Shaft.
