The Peak District has plenty of long walks for people who would like to spend an hour or more out in the countryside. There are plenty of places to explore, including dramatic gritstone escarpments at Stanage and Bamford with far-reaching views, to the deep mossy chasm at Lud’s Church with its magical atmosphere. There really is something for everyone in the Peak District.
Walking is a healthy low impact activity, and walking at your own pace will give your overall health and wellbeing a boost. You don’t need any special equipment just a pair of decent walking boots and a coat if it’s cold. You can go by yourself, with friends or even join a group walk. A long walk will increase cardiovascular fitness, strengthen bones, reduce body fat, and boost muscle power and endurance.
It can also reduce the risk of heart disease, type 2 diabetes, osteoporosis, and some cancers. A long walk will help increase mental alertness and energy along with a more positive mood.
During a long walk, especially by yourself, allows the mind to wander and mull over aspects of your life, sort of like meditation on the move. So, how about planning a long walk in The Peak District once or twice a month as a retreat from your busy life? I can guarantee you’ll return home refreshed and glowing.
